WWE's Top 25 most devastating submission holds

WWE.com has posted an article rating the top 25 submission holds ever used in the WWE.

All of the moves have been used as finishing holds. Most of them are currently used by present-day superstars. But the bigger surprise is how the WWE attribute the holds to alumni, including current TNA roster members. But here is the list.

25. Gory Guerrero's 'Gory Special'.
24. Big Show's 'Colossal Clutch'.
23. Great Khali's 'Vice Grip'.
22. William Regal's 'Regal Stretch'.
21. Tajiri's 'Tarantula'.
20. Ultimo Dragon's 'Dragon Sleeper'.
19. Dean Malenko's 'Texas Cloverleaf'.
18. Brock Lesnar's 'Brock Lock'.
17. Killer Kowalski's 'The Claw'.
16. Rowdy Piper's 'Sleeper Hold'.
15. Lex Luger's 'Torture Rack'.
14. Taz' 'Tazmission'.
13. CM Punk's 'Anaconda Vice'.
12. Mick Foley's 'Mandible Claw'.
11. Full Nelson (Not attributed to any specific superstar).
10. Iron Sheik's 'Camel Clutch'.
9. Daniel Bryan's 'The "Yes" Lock'.
8. Ric Flair's 'Figure Four Leglock'.
7. Bob Backlund's 'Crossface Chickenwing'.
6. Chris Jericho's 'Walls of Jericho' (Liontamer version).
5. 'Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase's 'Million Dollar Dream'.
4. Ken Shamrock's 'Ankle Lock'.
3. John Cena's 'STF'.
2. Undertaker's 'Hell's Gate'.
1. Bret Hart's 'Sharpshooter'.

John Cena's STF is 3rd place.

...DAFUQ?

His STF has gotta be one of the worst I've ever seen.

I refuse to call it an STF. It is just a rubbish chin-lock.

That's right. The chin-lock is in the list TWICE.

Put your fingers 2 inches above your ears and push inwards. Notice how little pressure it takes to hurt. When someone pushes with as much force as Khali uses, it really hurts. And when you are in that hold, it causes you to panic because your head is trapped.

You know who had a GREAT figure-four leg lock? The Disco Inferno. I remember he would invert it, it looked sweet. Haven't seen it in years, though.

There are a lot of great submission holds missing from that list.

Michelle McCool is one of the worst performers in the ring and on the microphone. But her Brazilian Heel Hook could leave an opponent unable to walk for days.
Natalya's bridging Sharpshooter could snap a spine.
Desmond Wolfe's combined Buffalo hold from a camel clutch position would leave you unable to feel your arm for a long time.
Val Venis' inverted figure four leglock.
And the Romero lock used by almost every Mexican wrestler ever.

Just to name a few....

Is that the same as Disco's? What was the difference, anyway? I'm too lazy to go search youtube.

He had two versions. The Venis Flytrap was exactly like Disco's move. The more common version is like Jamie Noble's trailerhitch, but Venis would lie perpendicular to the opponent, twisting the exposed leg.

At least the Sharpshooter is #1. I would have been more mad if it wasn't.

No Muta lock! That move should easily be on there.

That one is my personal favourite.

My main finishing move is a variation of the hold. Basically, I tie up the other leg before applying the hold.

I am stunned that Colossal Clutch, Brock Lock and Cena's STF even ranked.

No Crippler Crossface, Edgecator, El Paso, nor Kurt's Ankle Lock? This is a crime!!

Full Nelson should have just been listed as The Masterlock too.

I believe the "YES" lock can count as the Crossface. Edgecator never made anyone tap, and we know WWE isn't gonna reference Angle. I'm not familiar with the El Paso, so I can't judge it.

Brock Lock and STF are my only problems of the list. Everything else can stay.

Totally agree with KG.

The "Yes" lock is a crossface. The only difference is that Bryan sits back, whereas Benoit lay back. And the WWE are not likely to give Benoit credit for anything.

The Edgecator was a seldom used move that the announcers themselves kept forgetting the name of. They sometimes called it a reverse sharpshooter because they did not know how to call the move.

There were two El Pasos. The first is a single leg boston crab with a relatively poor grip. Yes, it put Mark Henry on the injury list, but that never took much. The second version is a little similar to the texas cloverleaf.

I think they credited Shamrock over Angle and Swagger simply because Shamrock was the first man to use the hold, and he is basically the inventor of the hold. And Shamrock won his first UFC with an ankle lock.

In fairness to WWE.com, they did make a special mention that Chris Masters used the full nelson and called it the Master Lock.

Wrong. Watch his legs. Yes lock is different.

I checked it out. You are right Phil.

Both men lock arm in between their legs. But Bryan wrenches the arm backwards for additional pressure on the shoulder. Now it makes even more sense that the crossface was left of the list.

Still, I don't see any reason for Tajiri's Tarantula to be on the list. It can only be held for four seconds or the person applying it gets DQ'd. It doesn't make anyone tap out.

Tha fact that Benoit's Crossface had made many of their "top dogs" tap out for the first time in their career easily makes it in the top 10, let alone top 25. If they don't want to mention Benoit, that's fine. But I still think either Edgecator, or El Paso should have taken Tarantula's place. Edge won matches with Edgecator quite a lot a few months prior to his retirement.

Btw, where is the Ring of Saturn?
