Veteran TNA star Samoa Joe has just announced that he has left TNA Wrestling.
Joe had been with TNA for close to 10 years. All he simply said was that he had decided to leave the company. He wished them the best and thanked his fans.
Joe was a member of the Beat Down Clan stable, primarily in a tag team with X-Division champion Low-Ki. In fact, Joe was X-Division champion late last year. He will continue to appear on the next few episodes of Impact and some of the One Night Only events as these have already been taped.
When he first joined TNA, he went on an undefeated streak that lasted over a year. During his stint in the company, he became one of only three TNA Grand Slam Champions. He held the TNA Tag Team and X-Division titles at the same time on his own. Many of his matches with Kurt Angle, and his triple threats with A.J. Styles and Daniels, are considered some of the best in the company's history. He is best known as a staple of the X-Division despite being much bigger than the rest of the division. He would claim the title 5 times.
A major highlight in his career was his impromptu promo at Final Resolution 2005. The main event was due to be Joe, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall against Angle, Styles and Tomko. However, Hall refused to turn up despite receiving payment for the appearance. Joe was instructed to give a promo that would make the fans content with the fact that Hall wasn't there. Instead, Joe gave an impassioned speech explaining how younger talents like him were fed up with losing their spots to former WWE and WCW veterans who had not earned them. Joe also featured in the only "Fans Revenge" match. This was a lumberjack match in which genuine TNA fans served as lumberjacks, armed with leather straps.
Joe is easily one of the most popular stars in TNA history. But he has also had his critics. Joe was a dominant force within the independents before joining TNA. But in TNA, he finally started facing opponents his own size or bigger than he was. Joe looked powerful against cruiserweights, but he clearly lacked strength when working with larger opponents. Joe has also been heavily criticised for using genuine kicks and knee strikes against cruiserweight opponents, and frequently changing spots to make himself look better. That said, he reduced this behaviour as he got older. There had also been questions over his conditioning because of how quickly he broke into a full sweat and heavy breathing. But Joe has performed a number of long and high energy matches, including iron-man matches keeping up with cruiserweights.
Joe will likely go back to the independents and Ring Of Honor. Rumour had it that the WWE had been trying to sign Joe for years. But Joe revealed that he had not spoken to anyone from WWE since his initial tryouts prior to joining TNA.
