The WWE has decided to merge the WWE Intercontinental Championship with the WWE United States Championship.
However, they have not decided when this will happen or which title will be retired. Right now, they are more interested in keeping the US championship. But when the Intercontinental Championship was retired in 2002, the WWE faced a laegr backlash from unhappy fans. This forced them to return the belt in 2003.
This is not a sign of the brand extension finally coming to an end. The remaining title would be defended on both Raw and Smackdown, just like the Divas and Tag Team Championships are. And the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships are set to stay.
WWE officials understand that having two separate brands is currently pointless. Now that all superstars can, and do, actively work both brands, there is no need for the brand extension. But Vince McMahon feels that ending the division now would be admitting that the idea did not work.
